Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is on the mainland, not on the islands โ which means "getting to Venice" from the airport is a genuinely different logistical question than at most other airports. Here's how it actually works.
Why Venice Is Different
Venice's historic centre is car-free, so no vehicle โ taxi, bus, or private car โ can take you directly to your hotel if it's within the lagoon city itself. Every arrival at Marco Polo eventually involves a transition to water transport or a walk from a drop-off point, and understanding this in advance saves real confusion on the day.
Getting to Venice by Water
The Alilaguna water bus runs directly from the airport dock to several stops within Venice, including near St. Mark's Square โ scenic but slow, and not ideal with heavy luggage. Private water taxis are faster and go door-to-door to your hotel's own water entrance where available, at a significantly higher price than the shared Alilaguna service.
Getting to Venice by Road
A private chauffeur or bus can take you by road to Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car park โ the road-accessible points closest to the historic centre โ from where you'll need a vaporetto (water bus), water taxi, or a walk to your final hotel, depending on location. This road-plus-water combination is often the most cost-effective option for groups or anyone travelling on to the wider Veneto region rather than staying within Venice itself.
Practical Tips
If you're not staying within the historic centre โ for example in Mestre, or continuing to Verona or Padua โ a direct road transfer is usually simpler and considerably cheaper than any water-based option, since you skip the lagoon crossing entirely. Confirm with your accommodation in advance exactly which drop-off point is closest, since Venice's address system doesn't map cleanly onto street navigation the way most cities do.
