Lake Como's combination of dramatic mountain scenery, grand villas, and lakeside towns has drawn visitors for centuries. Here's how to plan a visit that actually works logistically.
Getting to Lake Como
Milan Malpensa Airport is the most convenient gateway, with the lake roughly an hour's drive away depending on which town you're heading to. Milan itself is also a straightforward starting point if you're combining the lake with a city stay — the train from Milan to Como takes around an hour, though a private transfer is more direct if you're coming straight from the airport.
The Main Towns
Como town, at the southern tip, is the largest and most accessible, with a historic centre, a funicular up to Brunate for panoramic views, and good rail connections. Bellagio, often called the pearl of the lake, sits where the lake's three branches meet and is the most photographed — expect crowds in peak season. Varenna, on the eastern shore, is quieter and arguably just as beautiful, with a lovely lakeside walk and easy ferry connections to Bellagio.
Getting Around the Lake
Ferries connect the main towns and are a scenic, practical way to move around without a car, particularly between Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio. If you're visiting villas or towns further from the ferry stops, or simply want a fixed schedule and door-to-door comfort, a private driver for the day is a comfortable way to see several towns without managing timetables.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September) offer the most comfortable weather with somewhat thinner crowds than peak summer. July and August are busiest and warmest, and boat traffic on the lake itself increases accordingly.
