Pickpocketing is a real, if often overstated, risk in Italy's busiest tourist areas โ rarely violent, and almost always avoidable with a bit of awareness. Here's how to protect yourself without becoming paranoid about it.
Where It Happens Most
Crowded tourist areas and public transport are the highest-risk locations โ busy metro carriages and platforms in Rome and Milan, crowded squares and landmark queues in Florence and Rome, and busy train stations generally. Anywhere with dense crowds and distracted tourists is where pickpockets concentrate their efforts.
Common Tactics
Distraction is the usual method โ someone asking for directions, a staged bump or spill, or a group creating a commotion, while an accomplice works a bag or pocket. Crowded boarding moments on buses and metros are a particularly common opportunity, since attention is naturally divided.
How to Protect Yourself
Keep valuables in a front pocket or a bag worn across the body and in front of you rather than behind, especially on public transport. Avoid keeping your phone or wallet in a back pocket or an open outer bag pocket. Being mildly alert in crowded, touristy spots โ the way most Italians naturally are โ is usually enough on its own.
What to Do If You're Targeted
Report a theft to the local police (polizia) to get an official report, which is usually required for any travel insurance claim. Contact your bank or card provider immediately to block any cards, and your embassy or consulate if your passport was taken.
